Areas of Study

The Department of Chemistry was founded in 1947. It offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry which has been fully accredited by the American Chemical Society since 1978. The Department's American Chemical Society Junior Affiliate Chapter has been selected as outstanding for fourteen years by the American Chemical Society's Department of Educational Activities in Washington, D.C.

The department's objective is to offer the students a program that will foster scientific knowledge through a curriculum of formal education, research and service to the community. It is aimed to provide students with a solid education in Chemistry and the professional criteria to encourage their development in the area of their choice: education, industry or scientific research. With an appropriate choice of electives the program constitutes an excellent preparation for the professional school of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and medical technology.

The Department of Chemistry houses the facilities of the Central Research Instrumentation Laboratory (CRIL). This laboratory provides services for on-going research done on Campus at the graduate and undergraduate level as well as instrumentation services for the industrial community.

The Department offers a graduate program leading to the Master of Science degree in Chemistry (see Graduate Bulletin of Information) and collaborates in the interdisciplinary program of Master in Science in Food Technology.
