How to subscribe to a mailing list in ECE using Mailman?

The ECE mailing list uses Mailman to manage the distribution lists in ECE. Mailman is a software to help manage email discussion lists, much like Majordomo and Smartmail. Unlike most similar products, Mailman gives each mailing list a web page, and allows users to subscribe, unsubscribe, etc. over the web. Even the list manager can administer his or her list entirely from the web. Mailman also integrates most things people want to do with mailing lists, including archiving, mail-to-news gateways, integrated bounce handling, spam prevention, email-based admin commands, direct SMTP delivery (with fast bulk mailing), support for virtual domains, and more.

If you are an administrator of a mailing list, you may want to check "How to Configure a Mailing List". An administrator of a mailing list has the option of subscribing members of known email addresses. When you are subscribed this way you will receive a message like the one below:

Subject: Welcome to the "Icom5995-171" mailing list

Welcome to the Icom5995-171@ece.uprm.edu mailing list!
To post to this list, send your email to:
icom5995-171@ece.uprm.edu

This message informs that you already are a member of the mailing list 'Icom5995-171', in this case. The message written "To post to this list, send your email to: icom5995-171@ece.uprm.edu" it means that if you want to send an email to all of the members of this mailing list you just have to send an email to icom5995-171@ece.uprm.edu, for example.

In case the administrator want the users to subscribe themselves, you can go to the web page http://ece.uprm.edu/mailman/listinfo/mailinglist, in the example before it will be http://ece.uprm.edu/mailman/listinfo/icom5995-171. In this page you will see a section called Subscribing to Icom5995-171 where you provide your email address, and other useful information. After completing this form you will receive an email like below:

Subject: Icom5995-171 -- confirmation of subscription -- request 597773 Icom5995-171 -- confirmation of subscription -- request 597773

We have received a request from ip-number for subscription of your email address, <email>, to the icom5995-171@ece.uprm.edu mailing list. To confirm the request, please send a message to icom5995-171-request@ece.uprm.edu, and either: - maintain the subject line as is (the reply's additional "Re:" is ok), - or include the following line - and only the following line - in the message body: confirm 597773 (Simply sending a 'reply' to this message should work from most email interfaces, since that usually leaves the subject line in the right form.) If you do not wish to subscribe to this list, please simply disregard this message. Send questions to icom5995-171-admin@ece.uprm.edu.

The instructions of the email sent to you are pretty forward, as the part that says "(Simply sending a 'reply' to this message should work from most email interfaces, since that usually leaves the subject line in the right form.)". After you send the reply of this message you will receive a Welcome email of the mailing list, as it was explained in the first section of this page. You are now a member of the mailing list.
