Our History

The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers- Control System Society

The IEEE- Control Systems Society (CSS) was founded in l954 as a scientific, engineering, and professional organization dedicated to the advancement of the theory and practice of systems and controls in engineering. Today, the Society has more than 10,000 members around the world. Membership in the CSS has many benefits for practical engineers as well as theory specialists. Society members receive three journals: the Control Systems Magazine, the Transactions on Automatic Control, and the Transactions on Control Systems Technology. Control Systems Society members, and particularly student members, are entitled to benefits such as reduced conference registration fees, discounts on IEEE Press publications and more. The IEEE focuses on three main areas within its educational role to society: Knowledge, Community, and Profession. Each of these focuses comprises the general IEEE vision on creating human networks to promote the exchange of ideas to stimulate the enhancement of technology worldwide.

University of Puerto Rico - Mayagüez Campus

The University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus is an educational and multicultural entity focused on students who wish to obtain a solid academic preparation that will enable them to face the challenges of a professional environment. The Mayagüez Campus is the ideal institution for enthusiastic students who desire to enhance their knowledge and sharpen the skills needed to succeed in their professional careers.

IEEE-Student Branch at the University of Puerto Rico - Mayagüez Campus

Although the University of Puerto Rico – Mayagüez Campus was established in 1911, the Engineering faculty was not established until 1922. In 1932, the AIEE- Student Branch, American Institute of Electrical Engineers – predecessor to the IEEE was established. This was four years after the first Electrical Engineering degree was awarded at UPRM. Since then, the IEEE- Student Branch at Mayaguez (est.1963) has always been one of the most active student branches within the Latin American region (R-9).

Over the past years, the IEEE-UPRM Student Branch has been host to multiple workshops and seminars that enhance the overall academic experience within the engineering curriculum. In addition, its outreach programs, promoted jointly with other IEEE societies, have allowed the IEEE-UPRM to enhance high-school educational experiences as well. This has permitted the Student Branch to expand and become a prominent engineering organization within the campus, as well as the largest student branch in the Latin American region.

Our Student Branch

In the IEEE- Student Branch, we strive to provide the highest quality education and experience to all our members. The Student Branch encourages educational excellence, promotes interaction between student members and professionals and supports networking with peers around the world. The Control System Society was founded in our campus the CSS-UPRM was founded in 1999. We are a professional organization dedicated to the development of the theory and practice of controls systems in engineering.
