The Center for Hemispherical Cooperation in Research and Education in Engineering and Applied Science (CoHemis), the Center for Philosophy in its Interdisciplinary Function
(CEPHIF) and the members of the business, science, and engineering faculties at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez received a grant from the National Science Foundation, Societal Dimensions of Engineering,
Science and Technology (Program Director, Rachelle Hollander) to fund a retreat and post-retreat activities designed to (1) integrate ethics into the business, science and engineering (BSE) curriculum, (2)
integrate BSE content into ethics and value studies courses, and (3) to place ethics and BSE teaching at UPRM firmly in the Puerto Rican cultural, economic and political context. This
proposal stemmed from a planning and scoping workshop (also funded by the NSF) held April 24-26, 1996 and centered around three areas: (1) the selection of cases to be discussed and further developed in the
retreat, (2) the retreat structure (objectives, length, and the constituent workshops and their content), and (3) the expected outcomes of the retreat and ways in which these could be implemented, measured, and
evluated. The heart of this proposal is a retreat which took place December 14-19, 1998. This retreat had workshop sessions designed to help BSE and ethics faculty at UPRM select
and prepare case studies. It also had sessions designed to acquaint BSE faculty with the ethical approaches and issues that are involved in BSE practice in Puerto Rico. |
