The following proposal is the result of the planning and scoping workshop: Proposal: "Interdisciplinary Research and Training Program
in Ethics for Business, Science and Engineering in the Puerto Rico context. We submitted a proposal to the National Science Foundation for funding for a 6-day retreat which divides into three
parts: Exploration: The activities in this part are designed primarily to gather information. The participants (21 BSE teachers from UPRM) will bring cases representing what they find to
be ethical problems in their area of specialty. We have also invited individuals from the private sector to talk before the participants about the ethical problems they have encountered in their work.
During this period we will administer a pretest (to get some idea of how the participants view ethics) and conduct team-building exercises. Conceptualization: Next, UPRM ethicists (along with
ethicists invited from outside the university) will conduct several workshops discussing ethical theory, decision-making frameworks, ethical problems in scientific research, designing and technical transfer, and
ethical issues associated with risk. By means of these workshops we hope to address the concerns raised by BSE faculty during the panel presentations described above: we will discuss ethical theory,
methodology, what constitutes an ethical problem, how to integrate ethics into the BSE class and how to integrate BSE technical content into the ethics class. Integration: In this final stage
we will design strategies for integrating ethics across the curriculum, begin developing materials to bring about this integration, and plan for future activities including curriculum changes at UPRM and outreach
programs involving other universities in Puerto Rico as well as private industry. For example, we will help BSE specialists to lead ethical discussions by holding such a discussion with BSE students from
UPRM. Our outside advisors will also conduct workshops on case study preparation. In short, we hope to leave the retreat with course materials to facilitate integration, ideas for curriculum revision,
and plans for future ethics-oriented activities. |
