Department of Nursing

The Department of Nursing is one of the thirteen departments of the College of Arts and Sciences of the UPRM. It offers two courses of instructions, one leading to an Associate Degree in Arts of Nursing and the other to a Baccalaureate Degree in Science of Nursing.

The first program in nursing was established in 1964 up until 1995. The faculty had granted 741 Associate Degrees and 745 Baccalaueate in Science Degrees. Although most of the students are native Puertorricans, many students are second and third generation of Puertorricans who migrated to USA. Even though most courses are taught in spanish, the faculty is bilingual and English courses are core to the curriculum in both programs.

The UPR as the State University sustains an open door policy and graduates have come from different parts of the world and ethnic background. The faculty is also multicultural. The nursing faculty is very proud of all their graduates including the foreigners. Both programs in nursing are accredited by the National League for Nursing and as part of the institution by the Middle State Association of Colleges and Schools.

The Department of Nursing holds the honor to house the first chapter outside of mainland USA of The Sigma Theta Tau International : Honor Society in Nursing (Epsilon Lambda).

An Interested candidate must file an application for admission thru the Campus Admission Office. Not only freshmen students are admitted but also transfer students who have had previous nursing studies. For those students with previous nursing studies, challenge examinations are offered.
