Post Retreat

Post Retreat Projects

A case study book should be ready for publication by the end of Summer 1999.  It will be composed of the case studies developed during the 1998 retreat.   We will also include schematic summaries of the ethical approaches and issues presented during the retreat:  utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics, autonomy and ethical development, ethical aspects of risk,  ethics in scientific research, and ethics in technology.  The book will also contain suggestions for teaching the cases in classes including the decision making model presented by Vivian Weil and the case study  analysis model presented by Michael Pritchard and Michael Rabins.

  • Business Ethics Dissemination Workshop

This workshop was held February 26, 1999 from 1:30-4:30.  It consisted of a presentation  of retreat results and how to integrate case studies into the classroom.  A retreat participant presented a case study he had developed during the retreat and discussed how he had integrated it into his  classes.  After a general discussion of ethical issues that arise in business, the workshop participants asked for a more extensive workshop containing presentation of ethical approaches and cases for Fall 1999.

  • Engineering Ethics Dissemination Workshop

Professor Deborah Johnson presented in this workshop held March 26, 1999 from  1:30-4:30.  It began with a short presentation on retreat results and how to integrate case studies into the classroom.  Then Professor Johnson presented and discussed different ethical issues that arise in  engineering practice.  Finally, the group discussed ways of further integrating ethics into the engineering curriculum as well as ways of responding to ABET criteria concerning ethics.

  • Computer Ethics Workshop

Professor Johnson also helped us to begin the process of designing a course on computer ethics  by given two presentations (one primarily for students, another for faculty) on ethical problems that arise in computing.  We discussed different options to designing an interdisciplinary course including  developing different modules to include in the course.

  • Science and Agriculture Dissemination Workshop

The  final dissemination and integration workshop was held on April 30, 1999.  It consisted of presentations on the retreat results, ethical issues in research, and a presentation by a retreat participant of a case  study he had written during the retreat and had used in the classroom during the semester.  Participants from Agriculture help an ethicist develop a new course proposal for environmental ethics which would be used  by agriculture students.  Workshop participants expressed an interest in a follow up activity .

  • Further Dissemination Activities

In a meeting held May 10, 1999, the retreat staff discussed dissemination projects outside the university
