- Mission:
The mission of the CoHemis center is to promote human resources development, technology
assessment, and joint applied research projects and programs with potential
benefits for more than one country in the Western Hemisphere aiming to serve the
needs of the Americas with the participation of engineering and science researchers
faculty and graduate students from the different countries of the hemisphere. As its long
range purpose, the center's mission is to become a decentralized hemispheric applied research
organization in the context of the CoHemis Consortium.
- Objectives:
-
Enhance the technological and
human resources capabilities of Latin America and the Caribbean, and hence
their social, economic and commercial development.
-
Foster the protection of the
hemisphere's environment and natural resources.
-
Increase the global competitiveness
and sustainability of Western Hemisphere industry.
-
Bring high priority regional
problems to the attention of researchers and sponsoring agencies across the
different countries.
-
Promote Puerto Rico and its
University as ideal for facilitating and conducting effective technology
transfer and educational efforts in key areas of sustainable development,
where they have a comparative advantage.
-
Increase opportunities
available in Puerto Rico for quality graduate study in science and
engineering, and thus the number and quality of Hispanic-American
Engineering and applied science Ph.D.'s.
-
Link key universities,
science & technology institutions, and research centers throughout
the Americas which are committed to hemispheric collaboration in research
and education.
-
Promote the creation
of a multinational hemispheric advanced education and joint research
network centered in the University of Puerto Rico, with the participation
of the CoHemis Consortium. This network
would provide research funds, student assistantships, and technology
services to its member countries according to their priorities.
