On December 14-19, 1998, faculty members from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez (UPRM) and InterAmerican University participated in a retreat held at the Copamarina
Hotel in Guanica, Puerto Rico. The participants discussed ethics in the teaching and practice of business, science, and engineering (BSE). The Center for Philosophy in its Interdisciplinary Function
(directed by Elena Lugo) and CoHemis (co-directed by Professor Jorge Velez-Arocho)--both organizations out of UPRM--organized this retreat which was funded by the National Science Foundation, Societal Dimensions
of Engineernig, Science, and Technology, Program Director, Rachelle Hollander. Participants in the retreat included the retreat staff (William Frey, Elena Lugo, Jorge
Velez-Arocho, and Hector Huyke), the advisory staff (Vivian Weil, Michael Pritchard, and Michael Rabins) and 16 faculty members from UPRM and a faculty member from UIPR--Inter Metro. Participants represented
the areas of business, engineering, agriculture, and science. Also taking part were representatives from private industry: Paul Davis from Sandia National Laboratory, Victor Tossas from Banco Popular de

was funded by the National Science Foundation, Societal Dimensions of Engineering, Science, and Technology, Program Director Rachelle Hollander.
The retreat represents the second stage in a three stage process.
