Baked Goods

Case 2:

Nothing Like the Smell of Freshly Baked Goods

A university in Puerto Rico has a summer internship program in which business administration students work at Buendia Centro Recreativa, a popular amusement park.  Students get entrepenuerial experience while the amusement park draws on a resource of enthusiastic service employees.

One student, who has a double major in Chemistry, notices on the first day of the job that a store selling baked goods uses aromatic chemicals to simulate baking odors; customers come away with the feeling that they are eating freshly baked goods.  But aromatic chemicals are also carcinogens.  When the student points this out to one of his co-workers, he is told that the administration doesn't take kindly to this kind of information; if he persists he would probably lose his job.

Questions:

1. Who/what are the stakeholders in this case?

2. What are the ethical issues raised?

3. Invent and defend a course of action for this student.
